On Friday, August 26, Chapel Hill ISD and community members will pay tribute to former alumnus and Smith County Sheriff’s Deputy Lorenzo Bustos before the start of the Varsity Football Game. First responders and military officials in uniform will receive a ticket (at no cost). At 7 p.m. officials will be called to join the football team on the sidelines. In order to ensure proper accommodations, officials will be required to RSVP by calling (903)566-2441. The dedication to Bustos will begin at 7:10 p.m. with a special announcement, a student-led prayer, and a moment of silence. Following the moment of silence, an announcement will be made informing attendees of the Smith County’s bracelet fundraiser benefiting the Bustos Family. We hope the following first responders can join us on Friday: Smith County Sheriff’s Office City of Tyler Fire and Police Chapel Hill Fire Department CHISD Police Department Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire Department EMTs Military Officials Family and friends joining officials will need to purchase a ticket from the CHISD Athletics Department at the gate or online by clicking here. Attendees can park at the High School parking lot, 13172 State Highway 64 East, Tyler, TX 75707.

The Chapel Hill ISD Education Foundation granted 10 grants worth $12,000 to 20 teachers and instructional staff on Wednesday, August 10. “Teachers will be able to utilize the fund this new academic year and make a speedy impact on a students learning experience,” said Belen Casillas, Executive Director of the CHISD Education Foundation and Communications Director for the district. "We are excited and truly honored to have the opportunity to impact Chapel Hill ISD classrooms through Innovative Teaching Grants.” The foundation, which was established in May of 2021, is made up of seven officers and eight board members. The mission for the non-profit organization is to provide grants to teachers. The Foundation opened its resources for the first time in Spring of 2022. Teachers were asked to create and present an innovative project aligning with the district’s curriculum and Texas Education Agency’s Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). “Although our initial grants have started small, our intentions are to grow and provide additional monetary resources each year. The only way we can increase grant gifting is through increasing awareness and sponsorships,” said Cindy Gaddis, CHISD Education Foundation President. About the Chapel Hill ISD Education Foundation: The Chapel Hill ISD Education Foundation’s mission is to provide opportunities for excellence in education and partner with the community to enhance the quality of education for all students. This Spring the foundation received its exemption from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3). CHISD extends free school meals for all students new academic year The Chapel Hill ISD announced today it will continue its policy to operate the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2022-2023 school year. Schools qualifying to operate CEP serve breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, schools that adopt CEP are reimbursed using a formula based on the percentage of students categorically eligible for free meals based on their participation in other specific means-tested programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The program takes the identified students and divides them by the population. Identified students are those who currently receive government assistance such as SNAP, TANF, Medicaid Free, Homeless migrant worker children and Head Start. We count those children and divide by the total population in the district. Any district that has more than 40% of the identified students is eligible for the program. Chapel Hill ISD's percentage is 64.69. There is a federal multiplier of 1.6, therefore, all students will receive free breakfast and lunch at CHISD.
