Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15th until October 15th, with the purpose of celebrating the cultures of those whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, Central and South America, as well as Caribbean islands whose primary language is Spanish.
Students and staff at Jackson Elementary celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month every year, in classrooms and in Fine Arts, and this year with a performance by the renowned Mexican ballet folklorico troupe, Mexico 2000.
“It is important to us at Jackson for our students to see their cultures represented and celebrated, not just in their classrooms, but on stage as well,” said fine arts teacher Emily Greer. “Bringing in groups like Mexico 2000 enable us to not only celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with our students, but also to learn alongside them about a culture that may be unfamiliar to some.”
Mexico 2000 performs traditional dances in traditional costume from various regions of Mexico, and encourages students to engage with the music and dancing.
Greer said that Young Audiences of North Texas enabled Jackson to bring in this group that travels state-wide. “We are so thankful to Young Audiences for helping us bring Mexico 2000 to our school and help us celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in such a meaningful way,” said Greer.
