Chapel Hill High School Programs

Programs

Chapel Hill ISD believes in educating students in the least restrictive environment. The general education curriculum is the foundation for all instructional programs and full continuum of instructional and related services are available to eligible students. Special education instructional services and related services are available on the Chapel Hill High School campus. Services are individually determined for each student based on instructional environments that will ensure educational benefit.

Mainstream

This instructional setting provides special education and related services in the regular classroom in accordance with a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Qualified special education personnel are involved in the implementation of the student's IEP. In addition, the student's regular classroom teacher(s) is a critical component in the instructional process. Examples of special education services provided in the general education classroom include, but are not limited to, direct instruction, helping teacher, team teaching, in class support, paraprofessionals to help support instruction, instructional accommodations, curriculum modification, specialized materials/equipment, and consultation with the student and his/her regular classroom teacher(s) regarding the student's progress in regular education classes.

Resource Room

A resource room is a separate setting for special education students to be taught modified curriuculm with a special education teacher. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day.  Individual needs are supported in resource rooms as defined by the student's IEP.  The child getting this type of support might receive some time in the regular classroom with modifications and/or accommodations as well.

Life Skills Program

This instructional setting prepares students with significant disabilities to participate as independently as possible in critical natural environments. The goal is to achieve the highest level of academic progress possible while participating with maximum independence in integrated community, domestic, recreational and vocational activities. Life Skills provides educational services to students who require specialized assistance in the areas of academics, social, self-help, communication and independent living skills. Students are typically able to participate in some activities and classes with their non-disabled peers.

Post-High School Services

Students who have earned the required high school credits but have not yet met graduation criteria are provided post-high school services that emphasize preparation for adult life following graduation. The goal is to provide students with an age appropriate post-high school educational experience that promotes independence and life-long learning through the use of community based vocational, independent, and social integration activities. Development in the following skill areas is the focus of services: Vocational, Daily Living, Community-Based, Social and Leisure/Recreation. Services are individualized to meet the needs of each student.

The 18+ Transition Service Program

The 18+ transition service program provides transition services and supports in classroom and community settings to students with disabilities, ages 18 to 21 for expanded independence, self-advocacy skills, pre-vocational and vocational, and social and community integration during their final years of public schooling. Students receiving vocationally-based transition services are involved in integrated community internships or training positions with the goal of obtaining competitive employment. Students focusing on pre-vocational or adult living skills participate in a variety of community experiences with same-age peers such as community organizations, social skills engagement, and recreational/leisure activities. The nature of each activity is based solely on the post-secondary goals and needs of the individual student.

Transition Services

Transition Services is a coordinated set of activities for a student with a disability that is focused on improving academic and functional achievement and facilitating the student's movement from school to post-school activities, including Post-Secondary Education, Vocational Education, Integrated Employment (including Supported Employment), Continuing and Adult Education, Adult Services, Independent Living, or Community Participation.  Chapel Hill ISD has a "Continuum of Services" in place to support students and families with their successful transition from school to careers.  The coordinated set of activities begins by the time the student turns 14 and a transition IEP is initiated and continues until the student graduates from high school or through their 21st birthday while he/she attends a Post-High School Transition Program.
