Chapel Hill, Smith County - In the spirit of compassion and community, Chapel Hill High School Student Senate proudly continues a remarkable 27-year-old tradition with its Shoes for Kids program, now known as Kick and Coats. Since its inception in 1996, this student-led initiative has been dedicated to raising funds and providing new shoes for elementary children in Chapel Hill.
“Seeing these kids smile while they’re selecting their new shoes is priceless,” said Student Senate Advisor Tracy Steele. "I am incredibly proud of our Student Senate and each student, staff member, parent, and community member who generously contributed to make this initiative a success.
This year, the Student Senate, with the help of our school community, in collaboration with other schools, raised over $7,000 to benefit 200 children from ages five to twelve. Students received a brand new pair of shoes and socks. Several other students will receive a new coat for this winter season. Students were nominated by their classroom teachers to receive these items.
“It's a testament to the strength of our community and the impact we can make when we come together," said Steele.
The program now includes a full-day trip to Shoe Dept. Encore store, lunch at Cici’s Pizza, and other activities at either Discovery Science Place or I-Jump, tailored to different grade levels.
